When I started in the real estate and lending industry, there was new technology just being introduced – a machine that would revolutionize the way we did business. They called it the facsimile machine.

A lot of things have changed since then.

One of the most significant changes to hit the loan industry in years was initiated by the Housing and Economic Recovery Act (HERA) of 2008, which brought us the Secure and Fair Enforcement Act (SAFE). The SAFE Act is designed to enhance consumer protection and;

1. Increase accountability among lenders
2. Provide extensive and stringent training to mortgage professionals
3. Put into place strict qualifying criteria for Mortgage Loan Originators (MLO)
4. Keep a tally, through a nationwide database called the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS), of those lenders who have submitted and met all of the new and strict requirements needed to continue in the loan business (and disenfranchise those who don’t)
